My Model Classroom

Each student is different and unique in their own special way. I currently work in a Kindergarten classroom as a teaching assistant. It is my responsibility to provide children with a positive learning experience. Children have the right to have their needs met and receive the proper education. There are a total of 21 students in my classroom a lead teacher, teaching assistant and paraprofessional in the classroom. Students in the classroom are five and six years old. I assist students with literacy work and writers workshop. The classroom is set up in a way that students get a sense of inviting, simple and functional for all students, including students with disabilities and ELL students.

Our classroom allows for learning and play throughout the day. Everything is neatly organized and labeled which allows students to easily and quickly find what they need in the classroom. We also provide an environment which encourages learning. Students enjoy coming to school to learn and interact with their peers everyday.

The classroom is set up for different subjects in different areas of the classroom. As students walk into the classroom they each have a mailbox and place their folders in their mailbox. Students know to check in when they enter the classroom and sign in for lunch. Once they have completed their task, they take their spot on the rug. Our front board consists of everything we need to accomplish our morning meeting. We take our lunch count, attendance count, calendar, weather, number of days in school, schedule for the day, morning message and then we go around our circle for our morning greeting. Rug spots and table spots are assigned and changed monthly. This helps kindergarten students with easy transitions. They know where to sit and are ready to focus on learning. The purpose of rotating assigned seats is to allow students a chance to interact with all their classmates. There needs to be a little flexibility for change in case two friends sitting next to each are not making good choices.

Different areas of the classroom includes a classroom library with bean bags and pillows. Literacy stations which includes letter stamping, detective work, ABC’s, reading, sketching, letter magnets and pokey pinny. Our science area is simply an extension of a child’s everyday life. Students are learning through play, hands on activities and experiences, asking questions, exploration and using creativity to solve simple problems. Our science area is filled with many opportunities for students to explore. All materials are age appropriate. Students are able to explore rocks, seeds, insects, marbles, blocks, ramps, cars, legos, plants, paints for mixing colors, different materials such as fabrics, sandpaper, science books and their science journals. Students are also exposed to science tools such as a magnify glass, balance scales and rulers.

Our math area provides manipulatives and math games for learning. Students who suffer from metacognitive deficits are not able to apply appropriate learning strategies to math problem. It’s important for us to use effective strategies to help students with learning disabilities. It’s important that we use a strong instruction lesson plan, providing visual, auditory and kinesthetic cues, pointing to steps, reinforcing, encouraging and modeling problem solving strategies to help students with disabilities.

The goal in our classroom, regardless of a students ability, is to provide all students with strategies and techniques that can benefit all students. Effective strategies provide all students with a stronger foundation and understanding in all subjects.
